Disclaimer: I don't own Detective Conan. But I do have homemade hand-puppets for each character...that's normal, right?

I like to think of myself as an intelligent man.

I wouldn’t be in my job if I wasn’t—one doesn’t get to be an Inspector if one doesn’t have some intelligence. Granted, I know I’m not as good as the Kudo father and son, but they’re really in a league of their own, a class by themselves. It would be an insult to even try and compare myself to them. So I won’t.

But the point is that I’m not stupid. I do pay attention.

And when I see or hear something that sounds off the mark, I tend to notice, and I question it.

But this one is really blowing my mind. I know what I heard.

At least, I think I do. But…if I did hear right, which I’m sure I did…well, that just opens up a whole new can of worms, doesn’t it? The how, the why, and most importantly, the who.

But if I am right, then there must be a reason why this wasn’t mentioned earlier. It’s not exactly a small thing, so there must be some reason this whole thing was kept under wraps. I hope it’s a really good reason—at the moment, I’m too startled to really consider getting angry at being lied to, but that could change, especially if this was some kind of sick joke. But…well, when you look at the big picture, it doesn’t seem possible that it could be a joke.

It’s impossible, but at the same time, it seems to explain so much.

I glance around. Nobody else seems to have noticed the slip. Or if they have, they aren’t saying anything. So it’s all on me as to what to do, and I guess there’s really one thing I can do. Be quiet for the moment, and keep an eye on this. And ask the awkward question later.

Hopefully, I’ll get an honest answer…

“Yuusaku-kun.”

The writer turned at the sound of his name, and watched as he was approached by the portly police officer. “Megure-keibu?” Yuusaku said, a bit surprised. “What is it?”

“Can I have a word with you, please?” Megure asked. He looked uncomfortable. “Privately.”

Yuusaku glanced around. Parents had swarmed the stage where the Cocoon pods sat, gathering up their children. Mouri Kogoro had collected his daughter, and “Conan-kun” was entangled between both Ran and the several young children who Agasa said had essentially made him their leader. If he slipped away for a moment, no one would notice.

“Of course,” the writer nodded. He led his old friend into a nearby office. It was empty, and as such a perfect place for a private conference. As soon as the door closed, Yuusaku spoke up again. “What’s this all about?” Somehow, he had the feeling that he was not going to like whatever was coming…

“In the game,” Megure said, clearing his throat; he was obviously quite nervous about whatever it was that he was trying to ask his old friend, “when Ai-kun was hit with the statue and got game over.”

“Yes?” Yuusaku asked warily.

“I just wanted to ask…” the Inspector paused, uncharacteristically hesitant, before taking a deep breath and just blurting out, “if you could tell me why she called Conan ‘Kudo-kun.’”
