Agasa does seem to act as a father-figure and mentor to Shinichi, and we've seen that even when Shinichi was a kid, Agasa was keeping an eye on him while helping him along in his adventures. And I think Agasa's just laid-back enough that he can handle anything. Look at him with the Shounen Tantei--not much truly rattles him.
