Title: Change for the Better
Author: Candyland
Fandom: Detective Conan
Friends: Kudo Shinichi/Edogawa Conan and Hattori Heiji
Theme: #5—hidden treasures
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I do not own Detective Conan—all the characters belong to Gosho Aoyama. I just kidnapped them and hid them in my closet to keep them safe from…I dunno, something awful, I’m sure. Don’t worry, I feed them. Sometimes.
Summary: Things really aren’t all bad, are they?

“Got a question for ya,” Heiji said.

Conan looked up from his book. “Hmm?”

“I was thinking—“

“New experience?”

“Shut up. But I was wondering—do you think things would be different between us if you hadn’t been shrunk?”

“You mean if you and I had met and I was still Shinichi?”

“Yeah.”

Conan opened his mouth to reply…and then closed it again when he realized that he didn’t have an immediate answer. Instead, he had to stop and really think about the question.

If he had been Shinichi when he and Hattori met…somehow, he didn’t think they would have been as good of friends as they were. For one, he had taken serious umbrage at the guy showing up out of nowhere to challenge him on his own turf. And his initial impression had been that the Osakan detective was sort of annoying.

But because he was Conan…truth be told, he’d trusted Hattori initially because he had to. There was no choice. If Hattori hadn’t held that little bit of knowledge over his head, Conan probably wouldn’t have counted on seeing him again in any context.

And because of that, how many cases had they gone running off on together? How many adventures had they lived through? How many “debates” had they had about…well, everything? How many times had he gotten off scot-free for a momentary lapse in judgment (or sanity) while Hattori had gotten slapped and/or chewed out?

“If I wasn’t stuck like this…” Conan said slowly, closing his book in his lap as he answered, “…I don’t think things would be anything like they are between us. Not even remotely the same.”

“…in a good way or a bad way?” Heiji asked.

“I’m not sure,” Conan replied. “But put it this way—things really aren’t all that bad now, are they?”

Heiji grinned. “No. They’re not.”

PS. Random pointless fluff where the theme is sort of implied. YAY! Thanks for reading, all! Much love!

Yay random friendship fluff! X3 **SQUEE!** I love how Conan really has to stop and think about the answer, and what he comes up with.

Aww, so cute! *loves* Especially Conan realizing that no, if it hadn't been for the shrinkage, he and Heiji would never have been friends. *Heiji probably wouldn't have liked SHINICHI that much, either, IMO, without the dose of humility the shrinkage gave him.* That's very insightful.

Of course, I have an AU chewing on my ankle where Shinichi was blinded by the attack in Tropical Land, and that does lead to Heiji and Shinichi hitting it off better. Again, the boy needed a dose of humility...

Thank you! :D Glad you liked it!

I don't think Heiji and Shinichi would have gotten the "friendly" part of "friendly rivals" quite so much if Conan hadn't shrunk. Although Shinichi's ego is still far too big...

...for the love of pie, please write that *g* It's an awesome idea, and you're one of the best writers in the fandom, so it's bound to be an awesome fic *mild hero-worship goes here*

In Shin'ichi's mild defense, though he considers himself mentally superior to much of humanity, he does have a sense of his own limitations; he just gets so gung-ho over cases that he charges ahead recklessly. Hence Tropical Land.

He also possesses a firm belief in justice and a right to life that checks his passion for codes and puzzles within crime solving. Heiji's problem at their first meeting, after all, was that he was more determined to beat Shin'ichi than anything else.

Given the way Aoyama draws cases, I could see Shin'ichi still being in that position to scold Heiji and impress him with that sense of justice. Since their first meeting prompted Heiji to find Shin'ichi again, they might've still become friends. It would be a fascinating AU (not that you must write it, nope). ^__~

Heh. Thanks, Candy. :) I've been playing with their first meeting, but it kind of got bogged down. Maybe I should have Ran come in and tell them there's a case... Hmm...

I know. It's a very interesting question--would they have gotten along this well if they hadn't met under those circumstances? I don't think it would have been the same at all ^^

Thanks!
