Title: Rather Unusual
Fandom: Detective Conan
Characters: Hakuba, Kaito (General series)
Prompt: #10—years
Word Count: 149 words
Rating: PG
Author's Notes: I do not own Detective Conan. It all belongs to Gosho Aoyama. I simply borrow the characters, tie them up, and dance them around like life-sized puppets. I do wish they’d stop complaining.
Summary: Hakuba wants to ask Kaito about his name.

“I’ve been meaning to ask you about your name.”

Kuroba looked up. “What about it?”

Hakuba folded his arms. “Well…Kaito. It’s a rather unusual name, isn’t it?”

A big grin made its way across the magician’s face. The kind of grin that said it was good to be alive. The kind of grin that said Hakuba was going to be very, very sorry in a few minutes. “It is. My father named me.”

“I see,” Hakuba said. It seemed to jive with what he knew of the late Kuroba Toichi.

But before he could say anything else, Kuroba added, “Yes. Dad died two years before I was born.”

Hakuba froze. “He died two years…then how did he name you?”

Kaito seemed to radiate false innocence. “He left a note for my mother.”

“…knowing you, that’s almost possible,” Hakuba deadpanned. One of these days, he would learn not to ask.

PS. I did a drive-by ficcing on [livejournal.com profile] ickaimp’s LJ with this, and it made me giggle so much that I had to post it here. I should also add that it’s inspired by something I heard on a Muppet Show skit :D Hope you enjoyed. Thanks for reading, all! Much love!

Thanks! :D

I don't write much Hakuba. Can never seem to get his character unless Kaito's dancing in circles around him. And even then, pretty sure I don't have it right ^^;;

*laugh* It was magic, of course. And definitely not a turkey baster.

*snicker* Eww. :) Turkey baster. And the thing with Hakuba is that he has very LITTLE canonical character. He's in, like... Four issues of MK, and two issues of DC? He's smug. ... And that's it, really, he's smug. :) And a little obsessed, and a gifted detective... And smug. :)

*srsly shouldn't have asked* XD *glomps Candy*

Thanks for bringing that up, marsdejahthoris . . . can I call you Mars? Or Mars Bar? No, that might get confused with Candy, right? ^^

Sometimes we see so much fanon spouting out everyone's ears that we fail to realize that was just a lot of inference from a little bit of material. LOL, at least we now know he's got a nanny! *pinches Hakuba's cheek for precious*

MAGIC IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING IN THE MK WORLD! *is glomped* :D

*laugh* I don't copyright the name Candy or Candyland ^_~ God help me if I tried... >__>;;

...and now I have this vision of Hakuba arguing with Fran Drescher O_O

*snicker* Call me Ellen. Most people do.

Yeah, Hakuba's characterization in fanon is HIGHLY extrapolated. It's generally realistic, IMO, but it's fanon, so if you can come up with something else believable, more power to ya!

Alright, Ellen! ^_^

So that's where all that up-close-and-personal, graphic H/K slash comes from! XD

*laugh* It's magic. I promise.

That's very true--but his character in DC has seemed a little different from how he was initially in MK. And also, there's a great deal of fanon characterization for him, and most of that tends to be accepted. If you don't fit that, he's OOC. And I never feel like I nail that down ^^;;

Well, fanon characterization is just that, fanon. Personally, as long as it fits what you see in canon, I think it's IC. But yes, personally, I give the most weight to the two later appearances in MK, and his two DC appearances, because that's the more serious story. And because there's more of that. Basically, those give you smug and a bit repressed. And even the repression is kind of extrapolated mainly from what he said to Heiji and the fact that he shows NO strong emotions whatsoever in any of his appearances.

Which is exactly why Aoyama needs to get back to MK if as soon as he finishes DC. ^_^
