In His Own Defense (Phoenix Wright/Magic Kaito)

Title: In His Own Defense
Fandom: Phoenix Wright/Magic Kaito

Disclaimer: I don't own any of them.

Phoenix Wright had seen a lot of strange things in court.

And that wasn’t even taking Winston Payne’s hair into account.

No, he had seen magicians and movie stars and demon prosecutors (a couple of which turned out to be not quite as demonic as one would think by their reputation, not that he would ever tell Edgeworth that, of course), and he had seen all manner of freak-outs and meltdowns by witnesses, defendents, and guilty parties on the stand.

But somehow, none of that seemed to match up to the sheer amount of…well, of insanity that was currently going on in front of him. He was surprised that nothing had been done about it yet.

It was the right of the accused to take the stand in their own defense. And it was both the right and the duty of the prosecutor to question any witness who took the stand, including the defendant.

Unfortunately for Miles Edgeworth, this was no ordinary defendant.

The accused in this case was some kind of thief. He was originally from Japan, but had popped over to the States in search of some target. He had wound up getting himself arrested by a sheer twist of fate (and a poor welding job on that pole), but he had proven a tough nut to crack from the get-go.

First of all, his choice of clothing was highly unconventional, to say the least. Most thieves tended to favor inconspicuous clothes and tried to blend in with the night or their surroundings, whatever was most conducive to their crime. This so-called phantom thief, however, didn’t seem like the kind who could just vanish into the night—for starters, he was wearing white. A white suit with a cape and a top-hat. And in place of a mask, he was wearing a monocle, of all things!

And when they had tried to remove said top-hat and monocle, Gumshoe said they had been unable to. He hadn’t gone into much detail as to what exactly the scruffy detective meant by that, but he had noticed that the police officers who had been present at the questioning tended to get very jumpy whenever anyone mentioned toothpaste or high heels.

He had ultimately decided not to ask.

And then just to make the matter even stranger, the thief himself (a few phone calls to the police forces in Japan had secured an alias for the man: Kaitou Kid) had actually appeared in Phoenix’s office to personally request his assistance as a defense attorney. Phoenix had been too stunned to refuse, and the thief had tipped his hat, offered a polite thank you, and then absented himself, saying he had to get back to jail before his guards noticed he was missing.

A review of the prison security tapes showed nothing amiss.

By trial time, Phoenix had a bit more information on his newest client. Kaitou Kid was, indeed, a thief from Japan. He was a jewel thief, to be precise, and a master of disguise who left notes warning of his targets and frequently returned those targets after the fact, and he delighted on playing all sorts of tricks and pranks on the Task Force assigned to capture him.

But he never hurt anyone—it seemed to be the main rule by which he lived and worked. And somehow, that made it a bit easier for Phoenix to hold to his agreement to defend the man. Kid was simply a thief, not a murderer.

As he stood there, watching Edgeworth trying to interrogate the accused (and failing miserably), he was having second thoughts about this whole thing…although…

He had to admit that there was something deeply amusing about watching Miles Edgeworth ask a question of the defendant…only to have that exact same question repeated back to the prosecutor in Edgeworth’s own voice.

Finally, the frustrated judge called a recess.

When court reconvened, Kaitou Kid again took the stand. But now instead of merely mimicing Edgeworth’s voice, he had taken full advantage of the thirty minutes break…and somehow managed to actually disguise himself as Edgeworth. And even Phoenix had to admit that it was a perfect imitation, right down to the hair style and the perfectly arranged cravat.

Why do I always get the difficult clients? he sighed to himself as he sat back to wait for the inevitable show. Edgeworth’s lid was going to BLOW.

PS. ...I think it was [livejournal.com profile] ickaimp who suggested Phoenix defending Kaitou Kid? Can't remember for sure. Anyway, really random crossover XD Thanks for reading, all! Much love!

*insert much unsuccessfully suppressed laughter and a snort* Such delightful imagery. I especially adore the scene where Kid goes into the Phoenix's office and enlists his services...before returning to prison. XDDDDD

TGQ ICON! *SQUISH*

Thank you! :D I thought that seemed like something Kid would do... *snickers*

[identity profile] ytak.livejournal.com 2008-06-18 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Take it! I don't mind. Heck, play around with it if you want to. Nanami ftw!

It does seem like something he'd do. Just to give everyone a headache. And can you imagine Hakuba's reaction to the news that he'd been arrested? XDDD And his antics in the courtroom?

[identity profile] candyfics.livejournal.com 2008-06-18 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
*snickers* I wondered about that--both Hakuba AND Nakamori, actually. I can't imagine either of them would be too happy to find out that Kid got himself caught. I imagine that when Kid escaped there were a few toasts exchanged under the table ^_~

[identity profile] ytak.livejournal.com 2008-06-18 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
My icon would be the least of their reactions. ^_______^ They'd probably be disappointed they weren't the ones to catch him but not envious of the experiences in the courtroom.

[identity profile] candyfics.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! Eh, as long as Kid escapes and makes it back to Japan to further play with his favorite Inspector, all should be relatively well in Nakamori's world o/

[identity profile] ytak.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
You're correct about that! I remember his reaction in the robot!Kid chapter. *snicker* He'd be happy his favorite prey would be back in the country.

[identity profile] candyfics.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
The Taskforce will throw a party that Kid will attend, whether he's invited or not. A note is left to the effect of "D'aww, you missed me!" And Nakamori swears a lot!

[identity profile] ytak.livejournal.com 2008-06-19 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
And he won't show until they are rip-roaring drunk so they will see more than one Kid. As a result, there will be many small dog piles as they try to catch them.

LOL! Priceless. Excellent, fun crossover. Kaitou Kid vanishing from prison to recruit Phoenix was so great. XD And of course, him making a mockery of poor Miles.

Thank you! \o/ Glad you enjoyed it!

...now this almost begs the question: Kaitou Kid versus Franziska von Karma. Oh geez... *chases plunnie away*

Feenie is a defense attorney with ridiculous hair who is trying to get his client found not guilty. Edgeworth is the "demon" prosecutor who favors fuschia suits and frilly cravats. And everyone is gay for Edgeworth. EVERYONE. And also, if you ever wanted...you know...the games are uploaded on YouTube... *pokes fingers together and coughs innocently*

*glomps* Thanks, lady!
