Spring always meant that certain things were coming. The snow would melt, the days would grow warmer, the sun would shine more frequently, summer vacation was on its way (much to the delight of schoolchildren everywhere, and much to the anguish of their parents), and flies and grasshoppers would once again arise from the depths of hell to plague the innocent.

But there was something else that spring always brought, and that something was the bane of groundskeeprs and gardeners everywhere. They were little yellow flowers, ubiquitous in lawns and gardens everywhere. They came every spring in great numbers and populated fields and grassy areas the world over. Children would pick them in great messy bouquets to present to their smiling mothers, unaware that the flowers were little more than weeds.

But there was one redeemable quality of the dandelion, as any daydreamer knew, and that came when the flower had lost its yellow color and taken on a different look…

Flora studied the semi-transparent ball of fluff on a stem that was technically a flower. “You mean you’ve never heard of it before?”

Luke carefully examined his own flower. “It’s a dandelion,” he said after a moment. “Those are the seeds. They go on the wind so the flower can keep growing all over the place. That’s all.”

“I can’t believe you’ve never done this before,” Flora said with a shake of the head. “My mother told me this story when I was still little.”

“What do you do?” Luke asked, turning the dandelion over in his his hand.

“You close your eyes, and you make a wish,” Flora explained. “Then you take a deep breath, and you blow as hard as you can. If you can blow all the seeds off the dandelion in one breath, then your wish will come true.”

“It sounds like a fairy tale,” Luke said with the air of one who is really trying to act older than his years.

“For goodness sake, Luke, where’s your sense of adventure?” Flora admonished. “Even the Professor still keeps some wonder at things in the world! Not everything has to become boring just because you think you should be growing up.” She gestured towards the dandelion in his hand. “Go on, just try it. Just once.”

Luke’s gaze swiveled between the flower hanging from his fingers, and Flora’s entreating face. Then he sighed in visible defeat. “Fine. You win. I’ll give it a try. But it’s still silly!” That last was added almost as an afterthought, like he was more trying to convince himself than he was convincing her.

Flora watched as he did what she had said: closed his eyes, was still a moment, then took a breath and blew as hard as he could, sending the little white seeds off into the air.

And now it was her turn. Flora did the same, and made her wish. It was nothing fancy, and nothing outlandish, but a simple hope for the time being. And she inhaled, and she blew…

When she opened her eyes again, she was holding a bare flower, and the wind was happily carrying off a flurry of puffy white seeds. And when she looked over at Luke, he was watching her with an odd smile. “What did you wish for?” he asked.

Flora thought about it for a moment, then shook her head. “I’m not telling.”
